Using gestures to communicate with small children has been around for probably as long as there have been people. Teaching young children and babies how to communicate using a modified version of American Sign Language (ASL) came into vogue in the early 1980s. Researchers discovered several benefits to teaching hearing children to use signs as early as six months of age.

The trend caught on as parents and children alike began to enjoy the many benefits of signing.

Babies lack the necessary skills to form words to communicate but can easily obtain the ability to express themselves with gestures if given the opportunity. By teaching your child sign language you give them an advantage of being able to tell you what they want and need at a much earlier age thereby practically eliminating the "terrible twos". Older children can benefit from learning baby sign language. Studies show that children who are taught babies sign language have a larger vocabulary and increased verbal skills at an earlier age as well.

Today there are many different teaching tools available to parents and caregivers to teach and learn babies sign language as well. There are books and cds, dvds and flash cards that can help you teach the signs to your child.
